How the year, month and day progress bars are calculated

Each bar has ten segments, filled in proportion to how much of the year, month or day has passed, followed by the percentage to one decimal place. It is plain text, so the bar you paste is a snapshot and does not update itself.

The arithmetic behind each bar

Year progress is the day of the year divided by 365, or by 366 in a leap year. Day 100 of an ordinary year is 27.4%. Month progress is the day of the month divided by the number of days in that month, so the last day of any month reads 100.0%. Day progress is the time on your device's clock, in hours and minutes, divided by 24.

The bar is rounded to the nearest of its ten segments, so it moves in steps of ten percent while the number beside it keeps the detail. 47.3% and 52.9% both show five filled segments.

Why a bar can look uneven

A text bar depends on its filled and empty characters being the same width. In a monospaced font they are. In the proportional fonts most social apps use, the two characters may be drawn slightly differently or borrowed from different fonts, so two bars with different fill may not end at the same point when stacked. The emoji styles (hearts and flames) keep a steady width, but their artwork changes between platforms. The Loading style uses braille patterns, which a device without a braille font shows as boxes.

Sharing a bar so it can be understood

A screen reader may read a bar as the same character name ten times, or skip it. The percentage carries the information, so keep the number and say what it measures, for example: the year is 78% complete. On X, most symbols and every emoji count as two characters toward the 280 limit, so one bar uses twenty or more.

No. It is ordinary text fixed at the moment you copied it. Come back and copy a fresh bar whenever you want to post the current figure.

What percentage of the year has passed today?

Open the tool: it starts on today's date and lists year progress to one decimal place. Pick another date to see the figure for that day.

Can I make a bar for my own goal, not a date?

Copy any bar and edit it by hand. Each segment stands for ten percent, so replace empty characters with filled ones until the count matches your figure, then change the number.
